The Golden Tummy Guide: When Your Golden Eats Everything

Socks, rocks, tissues, grass, a whole loaf of bread off the counter. Goldens were bred to carry birds gently in their mouths, and most of them still think everything belongs there. The price: upset stomachs, diarrhea, vomiting and the occasional emergency.

Upset tummy or emergency?

Usually fine to watch at home (for 24 hours): one or two soft stools, one vomit, then back to normal energy and appetite.

Call your vet today: diarrhea lasting more than 24 to 48 hours, vomiting more than twice, not eating, tired and flat, or a puppy or senior with any of these.

Emergency, go now: - Swollen, tight belly, especially with retching that brings nothing up. Large, deep-chested dogs like goldens are at risk of bloat (GDV), which can be fatal within hours. - You think they swallowed a sock, toy, corn cob or anything that could block the gut. - Blood in vomit or stool, black tarry stool. - They ate something toxic (below). Call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 (fee may apply).

The 9 kitchen foods that are toxic to dogs

  1. Chocolate (especially dark and baking chocolate)
  2. Grapes and raisins
  3. Onions, garlic and chives (raw, cooked or powdered)
  4. Xylitol (sugar-free gum, candy, some peanut butters; also called "birch sugar")
  5. Macadamia nuts
  6. Alcohol
  7. Caffeine (coffee, grounds, tea, energy drinks)
  8. Raw yeast dough
  9. Moldy food (old bread, compost, trash)

Also dangerous: cooked bones, corn cobs and fatty scraps.

The bland diet plan (ask your vet first)

For a mild upset tummy, many vets suggest a short bland diet:

  1. Rest the stomach for a few hours (water available, small amounts at a time).
  2. Feed small meals of plain boiled chicken breast (no skin, no bones, no seasoning) mixed with plain white rice, about 1 part chicken to 2 parts rice.
  3. A spoonful of plain pumpkin (not pie filling) can help firm things up.
  4. After 2 to 3 days of normal stools, slowly mix their regular food back in over 3 to 4 days.

If it isn't better in 48 hours, call your vet.

How to stop the scavenging

Golden-proof the house

Make food more interesting

Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats and scatter-feeding in the grass satisfy the urge to forage.

Keep the gut steady
