The Golden Skin & Ear Guide: Itching, Hot Spots and "The Golden Smell"
"Why does my golden smell so bad?" "Why does my golden get hot spots?" "Why is she always licking her paws?" These are some of the most common golden retriever questions on Google, and they usually have the same root causes.
Why goldens have it harder
- Floppy ears trap warm, damp air. Golden retrievers have about 2.2 times the odds of ear infections compared with mixed-breed dogs, and floppy ear shape is one of the biggest risk factors (O'Neill et al., 2021).
- They're a classic allergy breed. Goldens and Labs are among the breeds vets study most for atopic dermatitis, the itchy skin allergy (Vet Dermatol, 2019).
- That double coat holds water. After a swim or bath, the dense undercoat can stay damp against the skin for hours, perfect for yeast, bacteria and hot spots.
Where "the golden smell" really comes from
- Ears: a yeasty, sweet or sour smell means an ear infection is likely.
- Damp undercoat: "wet dog" that never quite goes away.
- Paws: a corn-chip smell from yeast between the toes, worse with licking.
- Skin folds and lips: drool and food in the lip folds.
- Mouth: tartar and gum disease.
Hot spots: what to do the day one appears
A hot spot (acute moist dermatitis) is a red, wet, painful patch that can grow fast, often under the ear, on the neck, hip or tail base.
Day one: 1. Call your vet. Hot spots usually need the hair clipped and the right medicine, and they're often painful. 2. Stop the licking and scratching. A cone or a loose T-shirt over the area while you wait. 3. Keep it clean and dry. Don't cover it with bandages or creams. 4. Don't use human creams, essential oils or hydrogen peroxide.
Prevent the next one: find the trigger. It's usually a damp coat, an ear infection (they scratch at the neck), fleas, or allergies.
The weekly ear routine
- Look: pale pink skin, very little wax.
- Smell: healthy ears smell like nothing.
- After every swim or bath: use a vet-approved ear cleaner with a drying agent. Fill the canal, massage the base for 20 seconds, let your golden shake, wipe the outer ear.
- Never push cotton swabs down the canal.
Vet visit if: redness, dark or yellow discharge, bad smell, head shaking or tilting, or pain.
Dry them right
After every swim or bath: 1. Towel off well. 2. Blow-dry on the cool setting while brushing, all the way down to the skin. 3. Pay extra attention behind the ears, under the collar, the armpits and the base of the tail. 4. Take the collar off until the neck is dry.
Wipe the paws
After walks, wipe paws and belly with a damp cloth and dry between the toes. This removes pollen and grass before it gets licked in.
Support the skin from the inside
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil support healthy skin and a shiny coat. I give my goldens HolistaPet Immune Support Mushroom Chews. Each chew contains 300 mg of fish oil (DHA and EPA), a five-mushroom blend (maitake, reishi, shiitake, lion's mane and turkey tail), colostrum, astragalus, vitamin C and astaxanthin. HolistaPet says reishi may help with allergy-related itching. Dogs over 50 lb: 3 chews a day.
A healthy gut supports a balanced immune system, so a daily probiotic like HolistaPet Probiotic Chews is a good partner.
Supplements support healthy skin. They don't replace your vet's treatment for an infection, hot spot or confirmed allergy.
